Quick take: Lombok is Indonesia at 70% of Bali’s crowd level and 60% of its price. The south coast has some of the best white-sand beaches in Southeast Asia, the Gili Islands are a snorkeling paradise, and Desert Point is on every serious surfer’s bucket list.
Why Lombok Instead of (or After) Bali
Lombok sits just 35km east of Bali — a 25-minute flight or a 4-hour fast boat — but it feels like a different world. Where Bali has been shaped by decades of mass tourism, Lombok still has wild stretches of beach where you can walk for an hour and not see another person. The southern Kuta area and the Tanjung A’an strip are genuinely among the best beaches in all of Asia: turquoise water, white sand the consistency of powdered sugar, and dramatic headlands rising out of the sea.
The island is predominantly Sasak (indigenous Lombok people) and Muslim rather than Hindu like Bali, which gives it an entirely different cultural texture. It’s quieter, more conservative in the villages, and yet completely welcoming to international visitors. The infrastructure has improved dramatically — good hotels are now abundant in the south, the airport handles major routes from Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, and the road network is finally decent.
Best Beaches in Lombok
Tanjung A’an — The Postcard Beach
Tanjung A’an is the beach that makes people cancel their Bali plans and stay in Lombok. It’s a wide double bay with two distinct sand textures meeting at a rocky headland — pepper-grain white on one side, powder-fine on the other. The water is shallow, impossibly blue, and calm enough for swimming most of the year. A few warung serve fresh grilled fish and coconuts. This is the best beach on Lombok for families and for people who just want to lie in the sun.
Selong Belanak — Best All-Rounder
A long sweeping crescent of white sand with consistent small-to-medium waves, perfect for beginner surfers. Several surf schools operate here with reasonable rates. The beach is wide enough that it never feels crowded even in high season, and there are good warungs and boutique guesthouses to make it a multi-day base. Sunsets here are spectacular — the bay faces roughly west.
Mawun Beach — Hidden Gem
A small horseshoe bay sheltered by steep jungle-covered hills. The water is almost always flat and glassy — the headlands block the swells — making it the calmest swimming spot on the south coast. It’s genuinely quiet. Arrive early; food vendors appear by mid-morning but the beach never gets busy.
Kuta Lombok — The Hub
Not to be confused with Kuta Bali — Lombok’s Kuta is smaller, less developed, and more relaxed. It’s the best base for the south coast, with the most accommodation and restaurants. The town beach is fine but the point is reaching a dozen spectacular beaches within 30 minutes. Kuta Lombok has gentrified since 2020 — good coffee shops, surf gear stores, restaurant options — but hasn’t tipped into overdevelopment yet.
Desert Point (Bangko Bangko) — For Experienced Surfers
Desert Point is one of the top 10 surf breaks on earth — a long, fast, hollow left-hand barrel running 200+ meters. It only works June–August, is two-plus hours from Kuta on rough roads, and is strictly for experienced surfers. There’s nothing there except the wave, a few basic warung, and camping. If you surf, this is a pilgrimage.
The Gili Islands
Three coral-fringed islands sit off Lombok’s northwest coast, reachable by fast boat from Bangsal harbor (30–45 minutes). Each has its own personality: Gili Trawangan is the biggest and most social with bars, dive shops, and nightlife. Gili Meno is the smallest and quietest — ideal for couples. Gili Air splits the difference — social life without full Trawangan frenzy. All three have clear turquoise water, white sand, and excellent snorkeling (sea turtles are common).
⚠️ Note: Lombok experienced significant earthquakes in 2018. Infrastructure has been fully rebuilt. The Gili Islands and south Lombok beaches are fully operational as of 2026.
Essential Gear for Lombok
Getting There & Getting Around
Lombok International Airport (LOP) is served from Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Surabaya, and Bali. From Bali: 25-minute flight with Wings Air or Citilink (multiple daily), or a 4-hour fast boat via the Gili Islands. On Lombok, rent a scooter ($6–8/day) for the south coast beaches, or hire a private driver ($30–50/day) for families and gear-heavy travelers.
Best Time to Visit
Dry season (May–September) is peak time. July and August are busiest — great weather but highest prices. May, June, and September offer near-identical weather with fewer visitors and better rates. Wet season (October–April) brings afternoon showers and rougher seas, but prices drop 30–40% and the island is beautifully green.
💱 Currency
Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). ATMs in Kuta and airport. Gili Islands mostly cash only — withdraw before heading over.
🍜 Food
Lombok’s Ayam Taliwang (spicy grilled chicken) is the local specialty. Warungs serve cheap excellent food. Fresh seafood BBQ on the Gilis is unmissable.
